Screening Artists: Cinema, Exhibition, and Spectatorship
Panel Discussion Tuesday 17th April 6.00pm The Chapel Screening Artists: Cinema, Exhibition, and Spectatorship. This discussion will focus on the relationship between contemporary arts practice and cinematic modes of production, exhibition and spectatorship. The panel includes Christine Molloy and Joe Lawlor (Desperate Optimists), artist Jesse Jones and filmmaker Pat Murphy, and is chaired by Maeve Connolly, artist/writer and (acting) Head of the Department of Film and Media at IADT.
Since the early 20th century artists have experimented with the conventions of scripting, performance and storytelling associated with popular cinema. These intersections between the visual arts and cinema have developed within many different contexts of reception, including galleries and museums, but have tended to occur on the margins of theatrical exhibition circuits. A number of artists have, however, sought to produce moving image works specifically for the cinema, despite the existence of alternative platforms, including galleries, festivals and more recently, online contexts. Why is theatrical exhibition of continued interest to artists? What are the historical precedents for this type of exhibition? What are the political implications of (re)claiming the physical and cultural space of cinema? Does the space of the cinema invite modes of spectatorship and reception that are of particular interest to artists now? How do artists negotiate the distribution and programming structures that are particular to theatrical exhibition?
This event is organized in association with Dun Laoghaire Institute of Art, Design and Technology (IADT).
